St Lucia’s Marine Environment
Without oceans, there would be no life on this planet. Oceans contain 80% of all species, regulate climate and produce 50-70% of the worlds oxygen. In St Lucia, the marine environment contributes immensely to ecology, economy and quality of life.
St Lucia’s oceans and coastal zones are facing a number of challenges, including unsustainable fishing, over-development of coastal zones, seawater contamination from runoff, coral bleaching, plastic pollution and beach erosion from a number of natural and human induced factors including illegal sandmining. We must act now so that we do not lose this valuable resource.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Physical Planning, Natural Resources and Co-operatives. and the National Conservation Authority are tasked with helping to manage St Lucia’s marine environment.
A number of international, regional and local organizations are also actively seeking to preserve and restore the islands marine environment.
